5 Things to Remember before You Start Your Summer Internship

Written By: Dominique Wilmore  |  April 13, 2010

Summer internship season is right around the corner; have you landed an internship yet?  If not, check out the Id.Interns job board for tons of cool design internships!  If you've landed a gig already Id.Interns has compiled a list of 5 Things to Remember before you step in that office!

1.  Dress Accordingly. No flip-flops on the first day -- or any day!  Take note of the culture in the workplace and dress appropriately.  For instance, don't show up in a stiff three piece suit if the dress code is more casual and people are walking around in jeans and button up shirts.

2.  Bring your sketch book. Bring a sketchbook with you and keep it by your side; always take notes when given an assignment or in a meeting.

3.  Vacationing this Summer? You're a working adult now, so plan your vacation time ahead!  Nothing's worse then when times get hectic, deadlines are approaching, and the office intern has suddenly skipped out of town!  Let your supervisors and co-workers know well ahead time when you plan on being out of the office.

4.  Try and meet everyone. Even before you step in the door go online and view the names and profiles of the people working there; most creative companies today have this information on there website.  Remember, your colleagues are more likely to take an interest in you if you show interest in them.  So make an attempt to connect with everyone.

5.  Have fun! Don't be nervous.  Having fun at your internship is the most important rule of all.  You'll have fun because learning new things and embarking on new experiences is fun!  So work hard, enjoy yourself, and have an amazing summer!
