Are you bored at work? 5 things You can do when there's nothing else to do!

September 10, 2009

In every young professionals design career no matter what industry you are working in there will come a time when you are told that there is simply nothing to do!  Don't fret and immediately jump on Facebook - keep in mind that there is always something to do.  So when you run out of work and your supervisor tells you to "sit tight" remember these five tips that will not only get you through the remainder of the work day but will also show your boss that you know how to take initiative!

1. Organize. When times get crazy so does our workspace!  Downtime is the perfect time to do some house cleaning. Clean and organize your space in preparation for the next "big push".  You can also take this time to clean up and organize misplaced files and documents on your computer.

2. Research. Visit your office library or hop on the internet and read up on new trends happening within your industry.  If there is no office library keep some personal industry related reading material at your desk so they are right at your fingertips when you run out of work.  Keeping up with current events, products, and trends within your industry is key in every young interns professional development!

3. Teach yourself something new. What programs are you using?  Illustrator, Photoshop, SketchUp, Flash?  Chances are you don't know everything about that program.  Use your downtime to watch online tutorials and learn new tricks and techniques in the technical programs that you use most often.  This is a great way to spend your time and expand your technical knowledge!

4. Find your mentor. If you have a mentor in the office find him/her and start asking questions.  Inquire about things that happen within your workplace on a daily basis that you aren't necessarily involved in.  This is a great way to get a better understanding of the different roles your colleagues play within the office.

5. Get acquainted with the unfamiliar. Take a trip down to Accounting!  Visit other departments within your office and get a better understanding of what they do, how they operate, and that departments role in the overall operations and success of your workplace.
